Chapter 6

Brad

I really should have excused myself the minute Nora asked Lily why she’d run away from home. But I had my arm around her shoulders and one of those unconscious smiles on my lips that I only knew was there because it felt foreign. So when we walked into through the back door of the Inn into the kitchen I felt at home and comfortable and like Lily and I belonged here. Together.

“I didn’t run away—“

“Don’t quibble. Your mother called and said you left a note and little else behind except your wedding gown.”

Lily stepped forward out of my arms and I should have left then, but I didn’t. I wanted to stay, to protect her from I don’t know what. From the man she undoubtedly ran from. It wasn’t my usual instinct, but I let it have reign. It felt good

“Aunt Nora, I broke it off with Teddy and I can’t continue working for his firm, can I? I needed a fresh start.”

Nora who is normally a warm friendly person, I knew from personal experience could sometimes have an edge. I felt tension coiling and my arms itching to reach out and take Lily away.

“I was desperate to get away. I… needed to think. Without my parents hovering or Teddy trying to change my mind.”

“I understand. But you put a big worry into them and it would mean a lot to your mother if you called her.”

“I will. As soon as I figure out what to say.”

I watched Nora’s stiffness relent and she went to Lily, wiping her floury hands off on her apron, then putting her arms around her niece.

“You can stay as long as you like, honey. But you need to figure things out. what are you going to do?”

Nora gave me a censuring glare over Lily’s shoulder before she got back to work on her pie crust. I didn’t know why Lily had run away, but I couldn’t work up any sympathy for Teddy or any censure for this complicated young woman.

“For now you can both make yourself useful. Start peeling that basket of apples.”

“Yes, mam,” I said and jumped into action. I had no idea what to do. I’d never peeled an apple in my life and Lily gave me a look like she knew and handed me a gadget I supposed was a peeler.

She put a bowl between us and picked up an apple and started peeling as if she’d done it every day. I followed her lead.

“You haven’t lost your kitchen skills after all these years,” Nora smiled.

“No. I remember everything from those summers I spent here with you and Julie.

Now I felt like a voyeur again, but I wouldn’t let that go.

“If you need kitchen help, Nora, I’m looking for a new job too.”

Nora’s eyes snapped to attention and she scoffed.

“When I need photos for the menu or a brochure, you’re the person I’ll call, but you’re not exactly kitchen material.”

She pointed at my mangled apple that I’d managed to crop down to a fraction of its previous circumference.
