Kate covered herself with the woollen blanket and tried to hold back a laugh. Abel ran out the door so fast she thought he’d trip down the two steps outside. She had decided earlier in the day that she was going to try to be a good wife to him. He was a handsome man, filled with honesty and integrity. He was someone she wanted to spend her life with. He was a little on the wild side but there was nothing wrong with that, was there? He was bold and brave and he was good to his men. She saw that right away as they stood at the barn this morning.

A proxy marriage was much different than a regular marriage, but why couldn’t they make it work?

Who was she to not give it a try?

She didn’t know Jim Grover but Kate didn’t think she’d have liked the man. Not if he was so quick to give in to alcohol. The things she had heard about him were not pleasant. She was glad Abel inherited the ranch and was going to be the best wife he ever had.

She just had to convince him she wasn’t having a baby! A giggle erupted from her as she slapped a hand over her mouth. The walls in the shack were not thick at all. She didn’t want Abel to hear her. She should be angry that her uncle said she was with child but maybe he had a good reason to do so. Had he been protecting her from something? Did her uncle know something about Abel that she didn’t? It didn’t make any sense that he’d make up a lie the way he did. She’d make sure to ask him tomorrow when they went to town for supplies. It was a delicate subject but she wasn’t leaving Pistol Ridge until she had some answers.

Kate hoped the night would go by fast but a few hours later she was still awake waiting for Abel to come inside. When he didn’t, she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Visions of the way he had kissed her kept her tossing and turning until she finally heard the door knob turn. Abel tried to be as quiet as a mouse but wound up so loud he banged his elbow on the table and cussed.

She stuck her head under the blanket, her shoulders shaking so hard she had to slap a hand over her mouth in case she cried out.

A few minutes later he settled down. All she heard was his steady breathing coming from across the room. It was like a rocking motion if she were putting a baby to sleep. Slowly, her eyelids began to droop and she was able to drift off at last.

“Ready! Aim! Fire!”

She mumbled and pulled the covers closer. Who was yelling?

“Don’t let any of them get away. Fire!”

Kate struggled to get out of the make-shift bed. Shaking herself awake, she forgot at first they were in the middle of the ranch in the line shack.
