Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey:
The endangered golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) lives in very secluded areas of central China. They can be found in high mountain forests in large groups of up to six hundred members. Males reach seventy centimetres in height and females are shorter, standing at fifty centimetres. They have orangey-brown fur and a blue face, but the most noticeable feature of this primate is its oddly shaped stump of a nose. Their habitat can become extremely cold in the winter, so a short nose is beneficial as it prevents frostbite (they also have thick fur covering their hands like mittens). However, the shape of their nose does have its disadvantages. When it rains, water runs down their face, and into their nostrils, making them sneeze. For this reason, they hide under trees during rain showers. Males have a brighter coat, and the colours become more vivid as they grow older.
The golden snub-nosed monkey spends ninety-seven percent of its time in the trees: grazing, mating and sleeping there. Their diet changes a lot during the year. In the summer, they eat leaves, insects and fruit, and in the winter, they eat mostly tree bark and pine needles. Lichen forms a large part of their diet year-round. For mating to take place, the female must initiate it, and she does so by approaching the male and flashing her genitals. Unfortunately, this species has lost a lot of its habitat in recent years and it is hunted by humans for fur and meat.
