Paper birch grows rapidly to a medium size. It can be found in many growing conditions throughout a large but northern range in mixed hardwood and conifer forests, and it may be the first tree species to seed into open areas, where they can sometimes be found in pure stands. It is one of a few trees that can grow at high elevations, and it can be found near the tree line on higher mountains.
