Chapter Six

Christian sat and watched the cabin his mate currently resided in. He had been doing the same thing ever since he left his parents' house on Tuesday night. Christian had been home briefly for nothing more than catching a few hours of sleep, showering and scarfing down some food before he came back and sat in the woods bordering the cabin.

His mate had walked out onto the balcony yesterday morning with red swollen eyes, a testament to how upset he'd been the day before. It had broken Christian's heart to see Vincent like that, but knew he wouldn't be welcome to go and offer comfort. He had to wait and let Vinnie make the first move.

So here he sat, watching his mate, making sure everything was okay, even if Vinnie still looked a little lost. Vincent spent his days out on the back balcony—for which Christian would forever be grateful—typing away on his laptop. The only time he ever got up was to come back outside with food. Christian did, however, have a little hope as he watched Vincent walk around with the flowers he had sent.

A rustling in the trees behind him caused Christian to pause in his examination of his mate and pay closer attention to the surrounding area. He lifted his head slightly and scented the air. Christian stilled when the faint hint of one of his sleuth members caught his nose.

Not wanting his mate to be in any type of danger, even from this distance, Christian took one last look at Vinnie before he turned and headed deeper into the woods. When his bear became comfortable with the distance between the member of his sleuth and Christian's mate, he stopped and waited. If someone had a problem with him then they could damn well come and tell him to his face. Christian wasn't about to go search him out.

Christian shifted so he would be able to communicate. Even naked as the day he was born, Christian stood tall and proud, not ashamed of his body in the slightest, as he waited. It didn't take long before Russell McKenna and his two sons came through the trees.

Jack McKenna, the eldest of the two boys at twenty–nine, had the same sneer covering his face as his father sported. Neither man would win any attractive awards, Jack's nose had been broken one to many times in the past and had healed slightly crooked. His dirty brown hair looked greasy and matted. Even the clothes he wore would probably dissolve into nothingness if they ever got to see the inside of a laundry room.

His father, Russell's hair had gone grey at an early age. The man sported a full beard, which Christian was thankful for as it managed to cover most of his chipped and broken teeth. Russell had also managed, though Christian had no idea how, to go round in the middle. If he wasn't careful, Russell would soon look like he sported an entire keg under his shirt.
