A glass blower uses each part of her body to create a piece of blown glass—even a small one. She uses her arms and hands to hold the glass and move it while it melts. She uses her mouth and lungs to blow air carefully into the hot glass. She uses her shoulders and back to twirl the pipe the glass is formed on to expand the glass form.
Using your body expressively can be a lot of fun, but it can also take a lot of practice. If you dance, you may practice the same moves over and over again in front of a mirror until they look and feel right. Actors, comedians, and mimes all spend their share of time in front of mirrors as well, getting to know their expressions and movements. (Jim Carrey used to spend hours in front of a mirror when he was a kid, practicing silly faces, gestures, and movements.) You don’t always have to stand in front of a mirror to do it, but it’s well worth learning how to express yourself with your body, whether you do pliés or pratfalls, or whether you use your body to create beautiful sculptures or music.
