Going to Al behind Luke’s back had been a mistake—a mistake she needed to fix. Hannah lifted another pile of papers. Where was that blasted card? And why hadn’t she saved the number in her phone when she’d called him the last time? She was normally an orderly person, but her apartment was so tiny that one small project consumed every surface. And the boxes of archives that Mrs. Ferguson had dropped off was no small project.

She lifted another stack. Nope.

She hadn’t planned to betray Luke. She’d done it because she wanted the best for him. But if he found out she’d hired a private investigator after he’d told her not to, their future might end up like the ash-filled lot at the center of town.

She lifted another box. Bingo! She snatched up Al’s card and typed in the number on her phone.

Al’s voicemail beeped. “Hey, Al, this is Hannah Thornton. Call me as soon as you get this.”

A knock rattled her door and Luke’s face appeared in the peephole. Her feet did a little hop. What was she, thirteen? She took a second to compose herself. This was still just Luke. Best friend Luke. Super kisser, so-hot-she-wanted-to-scream Luke.

So much for being composed.

When she opened the door, he greeted her with a light kiss. She could get used to this.

Luke placed a long tube on the table, then pulled a Coke from the fridge. He motioned to the mess. “What’s all this?”

Hannah straightened a few of the piles she’d been sorting. “Mayor Jameson mentioned they might have an old storeroom in the town hall that I could turn into a historical room to add to the contest entry. If the town will still let me enter. The room would have a few pictures on the wall and that old stove from the vet house—I still can’t believe it survived the fire.”

Luke leaned against the counter. “Iron stoves wouldn’t work very well if they didn’t survive fires.”

Too bad she hadn’t thought of that before she’d nearly killed Luke. She’d made a lot of mistakes in her life, but so far that one took the prize.

“Any ideas what you’ll do with the square yet?”

The few spring rains had compacted the charred mess a bit, but she still didn’t know what to do with it.

“Every time I drive by I want to cry.” Hannah dropped into a chair at the table. The ache that had taken up residence since the fire pressed in on her chest.

“I like the open look.”

“It does give the town a different feel. Unfortunately, not the one I was going for.”

He stared at his pop can. “I actually had an idea.” He took a gulp of pop. “Remember when you were telling me about that star place—from the Gabby Girl show?”

“You mean Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls?”

“Whatever.” He set the can on the counter and reached for the tube he’d brought in with him. “Didn’t you say it had a gazebo in the center? Well, it got me thinking.” He pulled out a roll of paper from the tube and unfurled it across the table.
