​ Early computers could run programs, but the instructions for the program had to be entered into the computer each time it was turned on. The development of digital storage devices allowed programs to be permanently stored for use by the computer. It was found that there were certain basic functions that nearly every computer would need, so specialized programs called “operating systems” were developed. They handled functions like scheduling certain common tasks, handling input and output (I/O) with the various peripheral devices connected to the computer, and facilitating the installation of other programs on the computer.
