Here are some suggestions for improving your speed reading:
• Speed read emails. Use your mouse cursor as the guide. It works really well.
• Practise on materials you are not familiar with: for example, a mathematics, science or medical textbook. This will help you to create new visuals for words you don’t know.
• Newspapers are also a great way to practise speed reading, as words are displayed in narrow columns. Using a guide will help you get through these much quicker and form a basis for good practice.
• Teach others. It will improve your understanding of speed reading.
• Speed reading is only an alternative way of reading, so don’t think it needs to be a permanent replacement to your usual reading. If you feel like lying in bed reading a novel nice and slowly, by all means go for it. You are now equipped with a special skill that you can turn on at any given point.
• Comprehension will increase when you start visualising content in context (within the story). The more you practise visualisation, the more you are working towards stronger comprehension. Remember, comprehension is only the result of speed reading practice. You can’t just ‘do’ comprehension. It has to be achieved. It’s like going to the gym for a workout: you can’t just get toned, you have to work at it.
• Enjoy speed reading. Play around, make mistakes and persist. After all, this is a learning process and it takes time—don’t make it stressful. Without enjoyment, you may as well read as you normally would without any techniques.
