Three Tracks

The timing of all this was right, and the three afternoon tracks that I helped initiate became a highlight of the congress. In the Holy Spirit Track, I spoke on “The Holy Spirit in World Evangelization”; in the Prayer Track, I spoke on “Intercession for Christian Leaders”; and in the Spiritual Warfare Track, I spoke on “Territorial Spirits.” Of the three, I was personally most attracted to the Spiritual Warfare Track. Much to my amazement, four of the other speakers in that track also addressed the subject of territorial spirits! I have no knowledge that up to that point the subject of territorial spirits had ever been dealt with in a public session except for my talk in our Fuller Power Evangelism Symposium a few months earlier. It was a brand-new topic, and it seemed to fit all the new paradigms I had been considering, including Cindy Jacobs’ concept of healing nations.

At this stage of my life, I was just getting used to the idea that God at times speaks to us directly, not just by putting desires in our hearts or opening the right doors or giving us ideas or leading us to do certain things, but actually in words that can be quoted. It was during the Spiritual Warfare Track that this happened to me, perhaps for the first time. It was not an audible voice, but I distinctly heard God say in my spirit, “I want you to take leadership in the area of territorial spirits!” This, then, was clearly my assignment for the next season of my life. Little did I know that it would once again get me in serious trouble with the Fuller Seminary theologians and cause a crisis comparable to the MC510 blow-up!
