Mamm and Dat were sitting at the table drinking coffee when Phoebe came home.

“Well, off to bed for you,” Mamm announced as Phoebe came in.

“Oh, Mamm.” Phoebe began. “You won’t believe this, but the doctor let me catch the baby! I can’t believe it. It was the most amazing thing in the world. And Pauline’s named her ‘Phoebe.’”

“Now you go right on up to bed. You must be done in,” her mamm ordered.

Dat asked, looking puzzled, “What do you mean ‘catch’? Did a stork drop it from the sky?” he asked, chuckling at his own wit.

“Well,” Phoebe began. “Babies get born without a lot of help usually, so we don’t say ‘delivered,’ but ‘catch’ instead. I assisted. Pauline did all the work.”

Phoebe sat down at the table as Mamm got her a cup of coffee.

“Gut thing it’s Saturday. I can sleep in,” Phoebe agreed.

“Well, I guess that’s right,” he said as her dat continued to ponder this catching thing.

Phoebe helped herself to a thick slice of brown bread and, borrowing her mamm’s knife from across the table, helped herself to butter and jam.

“Here, let me make you an omelet,” Mamm said, jumping up from her chair.

“No, Mamm. Just this bread is fine, really. I want to go to bed then.”

“Were your births easy, Mamm?” Phoebe asked, her mouth still full of the good bread.

“Ya, they actually were. Some think it’s harder when you are older, but it wasn’t. None of my three were bad. When you keep reminding yourself you’ll have a little bobbeli in your arms soon, you can put up with the pain.”

“Do they give you a catcher’s mitt, then?” Dat asked, half serious it seemed.

“We had a nice family doctor with all of you. All this time I thought he delivered you….” Mamm continued the puzzle in her head now too.

“Do they also teach midwifery at that school?” Dat wanted to know.

“No, Dat. You need another degree for that, and it can take four more years or more. No way. I’m happy to just be helping, but for sure it was wunderbar-gut. I’ll never forget it as long as I live,” Phoebe added dreamily, taking another bite of her bread. “Is this a new recipe, Mamm?” she asked suddenly.

“Ya,” Mamm answered. “There’s no white flour in it, and it has a sourdough starter for the yeast. Only stone-ground wheat and honey, and oats and wheat germ and other things. It’s so much better for you.”

“Well, I am going to bed,” Phoebe finally announced, gulping the last of her coffee.

“I hope you can sleep,” Dat said. “We’ll try to be shtum,” he added.

“Oh, you don’t need to worry. Nothing could wake me now,” Phoebe’s voice trailed off as she headed for the stairs, but not before turning back and adding, “And Mamm, she weighs nine and a half pounds! And did I tell you Stephen and I have a date tonight, so don’t figure me in for supper.”
