Writer’s Statement
Quote by Langston Hughes
“What is poetry?” Langston Hughes asked.
Then answered, “It is the human soul entire,
squeezed like a lemon or lime, drop by drop,
into atomic words.”
I write because it is my therapy, a way for me to tell my story and deal with my life experiences in a healthy fashion. I write in hope of reaching some young men and women and help them to see that there are options in life that we often overlook. As a certified juvenile myself, I believe that I am obligated to try to reach these youth. That in reaching only some of them with my writing now matters.
I am what I call a reflective writer. I write about my life experiences; how my environment and or culture and the events within it affect me. I write about my reflections on social events in the world and the coverage of certain events or the lack of and why they matter so much to me. Currently I am working on five books; my first attempt at a fantasy novel, which I believe is coming along pretty good. The second book is the first installment of a trilogy of urban fiction. The third is a fictional drama that I’m experimenting with. The last two are collections of poetry plus a chapbook.
I’ve lost a lot of close people in my life so find myself writing a lot of odes and elegies. But I’ve played with a lot with poetic writing styles like, pantoums, sestinas and of course free verse. I’m a large fan of spoken word and slam poetry and love to perform myself.
I try to write stylistically so that it reads as it sounds when performed. I want my legacy or imprint on this world to be large yet small. Large enough that my actions and words affect enough people that they can make a change. Although some seek a wave, I only need a ripple. I believe that there are many layers to each of us. I’m just trying to share a sliver of each with every piece of literature that I write.
