Chapter 4
Step 4 Marking And Cutting Wood
Now that you have your tools, have chosen your wood and you know how to practice safety in your workshop you are ready for the next step which is learning how to mark and cut your wood. We will start off by learning how to mark the wood which is very important if you want your projects to turn out right.
You are going to need a pencil to mark your wood. Many people will start out using a pen and find that they end up having to mark the wood several times and it is very hard to sand ink markings off of the wood.
You also need to make sure all of your measurements are accurate before ever marking your wood. You can begin by putting a small dot on the area where you first measure but make sure you measure it at least twice before you mark the area. Remember it is best to measure twice and cut once than measure once and cut twice.
You need to remember that if you are just one millimeter off on each cut it is going to add up and your piece is not going to look right. When you are measuring, you donât want to measure all of the sides separately because chances are you will come up slightly off each time. Instead measure on the top side then using your pencil draw a line down the side of your board connecting it to the top line and do the same thing on the other side of the board. This will ensure you get a straight cut. Not doing so can lead to you thinking you cut straight but you may have actually cut at a small angle.
You need to pay attention to the width of your line as well as the width of your saw blade. If you mark where you want to cut but draw a large line your cut will be off, if you draw a thin line and your blade is thick your cut will be off as well.
To begin your cut you want to place your wood down and place your saw on the edge of the wood where you made your mark. Pulling the saw back just slightly you want to make a small notch in the wood. Repeat the process making the notch a bit deeper. After you have made the notch a little deeper you want to start moving the saw back and forth slightly making a shallow cut along the line that you drew.
Once you have a cut across the top of the board it is very tempting to saw all the way through the board but if you do this the blade will not cut straight and there is a chance that the wood will split. Your blade could also get stuck in the wood if you press down on the saw trying to cut straight through the wood. Instead simply rock your saw back and forth allowing the teeth of the blade to do all of the work.
