CONCRETE PAVERS

Concrete is a fun and inexpensive material to work with, and you can make lots of handy things for the garden with it: bird baths, pots, bench slabs, garden pavers… I tried it out by making a patterned concrete paver that fits in front of the entrance to the greenhouse.

A. Start by making the mold. I build it with shuttering plywood—special plywood used for casting concrete. With a saw, cut out the bottom to the size you want. Cut guiding strips to use for the sides, too. I made our paver just over an inch (3 cm) thick, which means that the strips need to be that wide too, plus the thickness of the paver. Assemble the mold with nails or screws.
