Most recently, I happened to watch a TED talk from Ron Eglash in which he described the fractal or recursive structure underlying African villages.28 Recursion29 is a powerful mechanism for expressing the structure of computing problems. It is applied to optimization problems,30 and to data structure definitions,31 and its mastery is considered foundational for any computer scientist. The accepted history of recursion is a journey through Western mathematics and computer science, and yet there are several African cultures for whom the notion of self-similar structures, both social and architectural, has existed for hundreds of years.32

The computing of today has its roots in traditions of handcraft, art, and music, and the minute we all admit that fact, we have the ability to break down barriers. With this in mind, I will infuse my teaching with these connections and broaden the historical view of our field, primarily because I do not want artificial barriers to participation. Besides, arts and crafts are beautiful and expressive and human.
