The Importance of Talking

During my thirty years as a counselor, I have seen that if a woman is encouraged to talk about all the things on her to-do list and her feelings about her day are listened to, the burden of her to-do list is gone by the end of the session. Her stress is more about how she is feeling than all the things on her to-do list.

Just by talking about all the things she has to do, she begins to release the inner compulsion that commands her to do more and not take time for herself. You learned in chapter 2 that women have more verbal centers in their brains than men. During the work day, if her words are used for solving problems rather than sharing, then she will not get the oxytocin she needs to cope with stress. Women’s brains are wired to be more verbal, and tending and befriending is how women relax. By talking without solving any problems, a profound change occurs in just a few minutes.
