Like me, Bart was an itinerant preacher, boldly proclaiming a holistic gospel that combined the good news of God’s salvation through faith in Christ with a plea for justice on behalf of the socially disinherited. Over the years, he had called tens of thousands of teenagers and young adults to turn away from the allurements of our consumeristic society and join in a revolution that could change the world from the mess that it is into the paradise for all that God wills for it to be.

In my own travels, I had met many college students whose lives had been transformed through my son’s preaching and teaching. Again and again I encountered ministers and missionaries who told me that they would not be in Christian work had it not been for Bart. Countless individuals spoke to me in glowing terms of how Bart’s loving counsel had carried them through spiritual struggles and rescued them from despair. So how could I reconcile all that with the news I heard on that fateful evening, that somewhere along the way Bart had lost his own faith in God?

It overwhelmed me. I hurt terribly.

I don’t remember very much of what my wife Peggy or I said as Bart talked to us that night. Bart had, of course, prepared for what he would tell us, but we were completely unprepared for that kind of conversation.

When we were alone in our room later on, Peggy told me that as we listened to Bart, she had been praying silently that my pain wouldn’t cause me to say something I might regret for the rest of my life. I am thankful that I did not, but I felt bewildered and unsure.

“What do we do now?” I asked my wife.

She did not hesitate for even a moment.
