What Can I Do to Help Grieving Students?

I am only one, but still I am one.

I cannot do everything, but I can do something;

and because I cannot do everything,

I will not refuse to do something I can do.

—Helen Keller

Overview

In addition to awareness of the many factors that affect what and how kids grieve, the school professional must be comfortable in the role of grief facilitator and equipped with tools that will be beneficial in facilitating healthy outcomes for grieving students. In this chapter, the important role of rituals, cultural considerations, and the use of humor will be addressed. Activities, strategies, and techniques that are developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of diverse student populations will be provided.
