SIGNIFICANCE

As the 25th president of the United States, William McKinley led the country into war against Spain in 1898 and acquired a global empire, which included Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

As a congressman and during his first term as president, he supported high taxes on goods imported to the United States. He defeated William Jennings Bryan twice, but his second term was cut short when he was shot and killed.

• William McKinley’s Civil War commander was Rutherford B. Hayes, who also later became president.

• During the election of 1896, McKinley campaigned from the front porch of his home in Canton, Ohio, while his opponent gave speeches around the country.

• The United States annexed Hawaii during McKinley’s second term, in 1900.

• McKinley was a short man sometimes depicted as Napoleon by cartoonists.
