Hanover, New Hampshire—As I traveled, I met people going to great lengths to support young kids in challenging circumstances. Generous, noble acts of love. Teresa Ellis runs Dartmouth’s Center for Service with its inspiring mission of preparing students to “lead lives of purpose in the world through engagement in service to others.” As a parent with young kids, she makes the considerable sacrifice of commuting daily from Boston’s North Shore to Hanover, New Hampshire, for her job. As if her plate isn’t already full, she sets aside time to help a young girl living in poverty. Ellis elaborated,

I have, for the last four years, mentored a young woman. The number of times that she has said to me that her school doesn’t think she’s very smart just breaks my heart. When I ask her why she says this, she talks to me about the standardized tests she has to take and how she struggles to meet the standards that are defined as “just proficient.” She says that if she is not even proficient on the test, how can she be proficient in life? That’s quite a message for someone who is only twelve to have internalized.
