“Idon’t know what game Avery is playing, but it’s wearing thin.” I raked my hand through my hair for the umpteenth time and skirted the large conference table to pace toward the windows. “I thought we’d moved past her insecurities long before I fell into bed with her.”

My brothers exchanged glances but remained silent. “Otherwise, I would have waited, you know?” I turned to him, seeking something. Understanding? Absolution? My insides were twisted like a pretzel. Why did I feel so damn guilty? “Hell, she was the one who started it.”

“It’s been years since you shared your sex life with me,” Connor teased. “Not that I’m complaining, mind you.” I looked around for something to throw. “Maybe she was feeling some pressure and wasn’t ready?”

“No one could make Avery do something she didn’t want to,” I said, pacing back and flopping into an armchair. “Trust me on that.”

“I can’t wait to meet the woman who had my brother willing to wait.”

“This paragon has him tied up in knots,” Callum piped up from his seat at the end of the long table. My father was going to join us for an impromptu staff meeting. It was barely 8 a.m., but after the fiasco at last night’s council meeting, it surprised me we didn’t meet sooner.

My life was in the toilet. Avery had successfully avoided me for over a week, but it felt a lot longer. At last night’s council meeting, the senior center project had been delayed six months, pissing off everyone at work and delaying my plan to leave AOS to go full time with my environmental engineering company. I had missed the meeting, waiting all night for Avery to show to feed Stella. I could only imagine what she was thinking since she was avoiding my calls, my texts, and even the cat.

Getting desperate, I’d waited outside her house and her office. Nothing. I made Callum call the hospital to make sure Avery was showing up for work since Avery wasn’t responding when I called. I was reassured to learn she wasn’t laying in a patient bed somewhere. Of course, after that, I had to spill the entire story to both brothers. Now I was miserable and getting teased about it. Talk about adding insult to injury.

I tried to understand Avery’s motives—embarrassment, confusion, self-preservation, regret? After months together, I knew her brain defaulted to these emotions when she experienced any kind of happiness. I didn’t understand why, and I couldn’t talk her off the ledge and back into my arms if she wouldn’t speak to me.

The room filled with my colleagues and the mood turned even gloomier. We were a glum bunch if ever I saw one.

“Well, team, we got the shit kicked out of us last night,” my father announced as he strode into the conference room, slamming the door behind him. There were nine of us at the table, but my father had eyes for only one person—my aunt, the AOS lawyer.

“Molly, what are we supposed to do with this mess?”

His sister pulled her shoulders back and raised her chin slightly.
