CHAPTER TEN

Malka Selby

Anxious to visit as many witches who lived in the area as soon as possible, Haydn showed me to the bathroom and told me he'd be gone by the time I was done.

I showered. I thought they needed to call a plumber. The water flow and temperature weren't consistent. It sputtered and ran hot and cold. Nevertheless, I cleaned up and dressed in the spare room and took a few minutes to lie down on the spare bed and gather my thoughts while nothing strange happened around me.

I was back downstairs and helping myself to second breakfast when Beck reappeared wearing a plain black hoodie, jeans, and trainers, Finally, confirmation that Beck actually owned clothes for going outside. Prior to this, I couldn’t imagine him covering up his toned and ripped torso, and why would I want to?

As he locked the patio door, he said, "Abney Park is just over the back garden wall, but we’re not going that way. Among other things, it’s a high wall, and neither of us can fly or walk through walls."

I felt his gaze boring into me as if he wasn’t one hundred percent sure I couldn’t do those things. After yesterday, I wasn’t sure either. Do witches use broomsticks? I hadn't asked this question yet, and I wasn't sure I was ready for the answer to this one just yet.

"Why are we going to Abney Park?" I asked instead.

He picked up a couple of bottles of water from a stock of them and put them in his black backpack.

"The park covers acres of ground and for you, being an earth witch, that’s a lot of earth. I have to collect something I left there, and it’s a good place to start practicing magic. It’s the closest big open space. Witches work with the elements, we attempt to maintain harmony in nature, and nature is abundant in the park."

"The chalice that was mentioned earlier? Is that what you have to collect."

He nodded. "It’s only a short walk to the park gate on Church Street."

Ready to go, we stepped out into a hazy October morning with the promise of sun attempting to break through the clouds.

"It’s a lovely day to go to the park." I wondered if my impression of it from the night before was accurate. I wouldn’t have called it a park. It was a spooky forest with lots of tombstones.

"It is," he agreed. "There are many reasons to go there. My element is water; there’s lots of groundwater there, as well as water in the air and settling on all the flora and fauna."

"Don’t you find it a bit creepy with all those dead people in the ground?"

Beck chuckled. "It’s the dead people who aren’t in the ground that you need to watch out for."

"In daylight?" I murmured.

After a moment’s silence, he added. "God, I sound like Haydn. What I want to say is in Abney Park those dried up old bones have never bothered me, again, death and decay is a part of nature.
