WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS

When Morley Safer of 60 Minutes fame returned to Vietnam in 1989, the former CBS correspondent was surprised to discover that a close friend and journalist for Time magazine during the war, Pham Xuan An, had also been a lieutenant colonel in the Viet Cong. In his book, Flashbacks, Safer also wrote about Doctor Duong Quynh Hoa (pronounced wah), one of the sixteen founders of the National Liberation Front, who came from a prominent South Vietnamese family and was a frequent guest and friend of the American Embassy. Until 1968, when she fled to a jungle camp in Tay Ninh Province, Hoa passed along any information and intelligence she had gathered at the outings with the high-ranking Americans. What Safer discovered and perhaps confirmed was that the enemy had infiltrated almost every aspect of the day-to-day life in South Vietnam, including the visiting armies.

David Willson, an instructor at Green River Community College, spent almost fourteen months in Vietnam. While he was not directly involved in the combat aspect of the war, he came face-to-face with the enemy almost daily. Like Safer, Willson discovered that it was seldom business. It was just personal.
