CHAPTER TEN

Veronica lay on her bed and stared up at the ceiling. The anger she felt at her mother had congealed into a familiar heavy coldness. She’d learned long ago to detach herself from the feelings generated by the woman who’d given her life. In the fourteen years since Veronica had first drawn breath, she didn’t have a single memory of a hug, a kiss, a moment of loving frivolity with her mother. Every now and then in a moment of weakness she’d give into the hopelessness that threatened to overwhelm her at the knowledge she had a mother who didn’t love her and a father who cared more about himself and his precious career than his daughter, but now wasn’t the time to wallow in self-pity. Now was the time for action.

All the hurt and anger she felt toward her parents and her shitty childhood she now focused on Jessie Angel. That girl was the sole reason Veronica had fallen from grace. It was just lucky her father had supported her in public or else she’d probably be expelled. Thank God he’d covered for her, even if it was for selfish reasons.

Jessie Angel couldn’t be allowed to get away with this. First, she’d told tales to the school counselor and now she’d gone to her cop dad. There was no way Veronica was going to give her a chance to tattle on her a third time. It was time to bring the girl down once and for all. With her mind made up, she reached for her phone and called Ricky. He answered on the fourth ring.

“What took you so long?” she demanded in a petulant tone.

“Sorry. I’m at footy practice. We’re not supposed to be on our phones. What’s the matter?”

“It’s Jessie Angel.”

Ricky’s tone turned wary. “What’s she done now?”

“She’s a bitch!” Veronica wailed. “First she went to Mr Thompson and told lies about me. I was called up to the principal’s office! My father had to come down. It was so humiliating! To make matters worse, now she’s told the same lies to her father and her therapist. My parents have just met with them. It was awful the things she said about me.”

“Why would she do that?” Ricky sounded bewildered.

“I don’t know!” Veronica cried. “She hates me!”

“But…why?”

“Why does there have to be a reason? She just does. I think she’s jealous. A lot of girls are.”

“What do you want me to do?” he asked.

“It’s time we bring Jessie Angel down once and for all. It’s time to end this.”

“What do you mean?”

“The prank. You don’t really like her, remember? How could you like someone like that? This has all been a joke. And it’s time to let her in on it.”

“I don’t know, Veronica. It seems a bit cruel. Can’t we just forget about it?”

The uncertainty in his tone set her teeth on edge. She clenched her fists in an effort to stem her irritation. If she’d known he was going to be so spineless about finishing it, she’d never have chosen him for the job.
