Many alternatives have been proposed to Bloom’s taxonomy, but the value of the general framework has been proven over time. During the 1990s, a new group of cognitive psychologists led by Lorin Anderson, a former student of Bloom’s, updated the taxonomy to make it more relevant to 21st-century work (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001).

We like the updated taxonomy because it reflects the new era of creativity that has been facilitated by the emergence of the online digital world. What we mean when we talk about higher-level thinking is thought that is moving to the higher levels of the taxonomy of thinking skills. This is the kind of thinking that is required for real-world problem solving, information processing, and idea creation.
