• Maintenance. The ease of keeping a finish in good condition should be a primary concern. If you do not have the time to put a finish coat on a wood deck or furniture when they need it, wood should not be in contention as a material for use in your garden. If you know you will be using a pressure washer to clean a brick patio, reconsider using sand or gravel in between the bricks.

• Sustainability. Because of climate change, the level of sustainability of anything you buy should be of great concern. Manufacturers use such a broad array of practices that you should expect to encounter some dilemmas. It is not as straightforward as you might hope. For instance, teak can only grow in certain climates, usually meaning that it has to travel quite a distance. Weigh its use of transportation energy against its ability to regrow quickly, its being plantation grown, and its durability. See “Evaluating degrees of green” for things to consider.

• Price. Always purchase the best you can afford after you have evaluated all other criteria. Never take price at face value, though. Sometimes a more expensive item has a much longer life span. If you know an item will have to be replaced every five years, how expensive is this item compared to an item that costs twice as much but lasts twenty years?
