Construction Tip

You don’t have to accept every invitation that comes your way, but it is always nice to send a gift. How nice that gift is can be totally up to you.

Although my office can at times be a hornets’ nest, I’ve also met some ride-or-die friends whom I would do anything for. To me, ride-or-die means someone who won’t just tell you what you want to hear; they’ll be there through good and bad, with the truth. Sometimes you’re popping champagne, and sometimes tears are flowing. Sometimes both at once. There’s a quote I love that goes: “A good friend will bail you out of jail, but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, ‘Damn, that was fun!’ ” To me, that says it all. You want to hang on to the friends who’ll stick by you during the worst times, and not just invite you to parties during the best.

It took me a while to find my ride-or-dies when I started at the Oppenheim Group. It’s an intimidating group of powerful, successful women, and walking into that office as the new girl was a little scary at first, but I had to remind myself I’d done this before. If I had made it through soap diva initiation, I could survive real estate. On soaps, other actors might be suspicious that you’re there to steal their spotlight, so I learned that it’s best to come in humble (but confident), and not stride in there, guns blazing like you own the place. I had to do the same thing at the Selling Sunset office. I tried to walk in there with respect and establish that I was a team player, instead of a one-woman show. In both environments, people can get territorial or jealous, so even though I have a competitive edge, I had to quell all that drama and show them I was chill, I was there to work, and I wasn’t there to try to ruffle feathers. It was rough in the beginning, but both environments reminded me not to take things personally. I’ve spent my entire life learning not to take things personally.

Some days can obviously be worse than others. If I need a little extra fire, I make sure to dress in something that makes me feel good about myself. Everyone has that power outfit that gives you a boost of confidence—one that’s comfortable and doesn’t require you to nervously fiddle with loose straps or an awkward collar. It may be a superficial fix, but it helps. That’s something I learned in acting: when you put on the clothes, it helps you find the character. So when you’re trying to bring out your inner Yoncé, dress the part. Whether it’s a big interview, important presentation day, or you know you have to face a tough coworker, make sure you’re not toddling in heels that are too tight or pulling on your hem. This was of particular importance on Dancing with the Stars. The week I was Maleficent, I kept having wardrobe malfunctions.
