Chapter Nine

Riley

Riley woke up gently, feeling the pleasant sensation of the morning after sex. As usual, her body was sated and relaxed, with the touch of the welcome ache that reminded her of their surprisingly intimate shower.

He was already awake and she could hear the chaos of a morning with Zoe. It was Wednesday, which meant it was her day to take her to school. She slowly got up, stretching out her tightened body. She got dressed and left the bedroom to see Zoe was already ready to go.

“I’ll take her in today,” Oliver said, kissing her on the forehead.

“But it’s my day to do it.”

“I know, but I’ve missed so much time with her lately. I’d love to do it.”

“Well, I can’t say no to a relaxing morning by myself,” she mused. She had work and therapy today, neither of which were going to be easy.

“I made coffee,” he said. “Zoe, are you ready to go?”

“Can we get cinnamon rolls?” Zoe asked as she put on her backpack. She gave Riley a hug before her attention was back on her father.

“What happened to the three eggs you just ate?”

“I’m still hungry.”

“Fine, I suppose we could swing by our favorite coffee shop.” He glanced at Riley.

“The shift leader on duty today knows who you are,” she replied. “Get as much as you want.”

She smiled as they left. With Oliver being so busy, he and Zoe hadn’t had much time together. Recently, Riley had been Zoe’s favorite, but once the newness of the adoption wore off, she wanted her dad too.

Zoe loved Riley, but Oliver’s business life had consumed a lot of all three of their lives. Whenever he had the time, she expected Zoe to be attached to him rather than her.

She received a notification on her phone, which wound up being a voicemail from her gynecologist’s office. She usually had notifications off in the morning so she could focus on getting Zoe to school.

Apparently, there was an issue where her insurance wasn’t covering the birth control implant. She groaned, knowing she still had her pill refill that she had picked up not too long ago, but she kept forgetting to take it, especially while she and Oliver were so busy.

She called her insurance, and they asked for so much information that the call took twenty minutes. When she finally got them to agree to cover it, her fingers were tapping against the counter in annoyance.

Now she had to go to therapy in a sour mood. She hated dealing with insurance. After fuming for a few minutes, she rummaged through her closet to see if she still had a box of Plan B in her things. She tried to keep one box in her possession at all times just in case she forgot to take her birth control and she and Oliver had sex.

She probably hadn’t taken it regularly enough for it to work.

After no luck in her closet, she was close to being late for her appointment. She checked Oliver’s nightstand, just in case she hid them in a place Zoe wouldn’t find them.
