This is a good example of how an artist’s work can be adjusted to suit popular taste. Toyokuni III’s “big head” prints, like the one here, have stronger, more garish colors and a completely different aesthetic concept compared to the work of earlier kabuki artists. The portraits are less sophisticated but still have a charm of their own.
