Protecting Your Paradise

‘A thorn defends the rose, harming only those who would steal the blossom.’

CHINESE PROVERB

Sweet-smelling lavender not only attracts beautiful butterflies into your garden but also deters slugs, snails and aphids, so plant liberally.

Prevent frost damage to your precious plants in winter by spraying them with cold water in the evening. This will generate enough heat during evaporation to protect from frost.

The next time you boil the kettle, sprinkle any leftover water on your cabbage crop to kill off those pesky cabbage worms.

Plant onions amongst the other vegetables in your garden to deter rabbits – the marauding rodents also dislike foxgloves, so plant a few nearby.

GARDEN LORE…

An old wives’ tale has it that burying horse hair will trap unwanted bugs in the soil and prick them to death.
