Making Bias Stems
These are used on many of the flowers in different widths and lengths. Some are stuffed with cord, soft wool (yarn) or wadding (batting) while others are left flat. Because the strips usually need to bend and stretch around curves, they are cut on the bias grain of the fabric, which is more stretchy. Quite short lengths are needed, so start at one corner of your fabric rather than cutting diagonally from one long edge. There are different ways of making bias stems and I think I have tried them all! The method I prefer is to use bias bars when possible. These are heatproof and are therefore safe to use with an iron. Cut the width of the strips twice the finished width required plus 1â4in (1.3cm).
1. Start by cutting the strips the required width and length along the bias grain (see Fig 1A, B, C, D).
