Serena glanced at Trent. He’d been unusually quiet since leaving Heidi’s home. He seemed lost in his thoughts, and she couldn’t help but wonder if he was thinking about the night of Jimmy’s murder.

The night he’d been passed out, much like Heidi had been.

“I’m proud of you, Trent.”

He lifted a brow. “I didn’t do anything.”

“You’re here, aren’t you? Staying sober while helping me find Jimmy’s killer. That’s a lot to be proud of.” She risked a quick glance at his somber expression. “Most guys would have told me to take a hike.”

“I tried that, but you ended up saving my life.”

She let out a weak laugh. “True, but I think you’d have handled that guy outside the Thirsty Saloon all by yourself.”

“Maybe.” His tone was noncommittal. “But the attack at Whistlers was all you. I owe you more than I’ll ever be able to repay.”

“There isn’t a scoreboard,” she chided softly. “I’m glad to have been there when you needed me. We’re in this together.”

“So where are we going?” Trent clearly wanted to change the subject. “Another motel?”

“Yes. I have a question, though. When’s the last time you saw Brett Caine?”

His brow furrowed. “The band manager? Probably at Jimmy’s funeral. Why?”

“I was thinking we should talk to him too.” She headed out of Brentwood, leaving the million-dollar mansions behind. “Is he still representing Jed and Dave?”

“Yes, he’s managing the Bootleggers.” He shrugged. “That’s how Jed and Dave got their positions.”

“But their lead singer isn’t as good as Jimmy was, right?”

“Not from the handful of songs I heard.” He turned in his seat. “Why all the questions about Brett? He lost a big meal ticket when Jimmy died.”

“As you pointed out, Brett could have lost his temper with Jimmy. Maybe he saw how the drugs and alcohol might bring him down.” She hesitated, then said, “I’m thinking Jimmy’s death wasn’t preplanned. I mean, I doubt someone came to the celebration that night to kill him.”

“Probably not.” He was silent for a long moment. “I still have Brett’s number.”

“You do?” She was surprised. “Are you willing to reach out to him? Set up a meeting?”

He nodded and fished his phone from his pocket. Without hesitation, he made the call. “Brett? Trent Atkins, here. Was wondering if you have time to chat?”

She couldn’t hear Brett’s side of the conversation, but it didn’t take long to figure out the meeting was a go. “Great, we can meet at Hathaways for lunch, no problem. Oh, I’m bringing a girlfriend along too.”

Girlfriend? Her chest tightened as she realized she liked the sound of that, even though she knew Trent wasn’t serious. No doubt, he didn’t want to warn Brett about the true nature of their meeting.

“Okay, see you then.” Trent disconnected from the call. “Hathaways is a fancy restaurant in downtown Nashville. I have plenty of money, no need to worry about your expense account.”

This wasn’t the time to argue about who was going to pay for the meal. “Is Brett thinking you’ve changed your mind about joining Bootleggers?”

“I hinted at that, yes,” Trent admitted.
