Merche Esmeralda: International Traveller and Film Star

Merche Esmeralda, in her late 60s when I met her, is, without exaggeration, a flamenco star, whose career spans from the tumultuous years of the Franco regime to today and across every continent except Antarctica. I was privileged not only to watch Merche teach several classes but also to interview her during my fieldwork in Madrid. Merche was born in 1947 in Sevilla. She did not grow up as part of the dynastical flamenco families, and instead started singing cante at Academia Sevilla de Adelita Domingo. She described her early interactions with flamenco to me:

I started singing because two of my uncles were aficionados who moved in the flamenco world and my grandmother was a beautiful general singer. I liked to sing but when I went to study with Adelita Domingo I found I did not have good voice power and then when I discovered the dance, I saw that I was more passionate about that. (M. Esmeralda, personal communication, Feb. 17, 2014)
