Capital I-shape

The capital I shape is formed by

o Reading the first two or three lines on a page

o Super-reading down the middle of the page and then

o Reading the last two or three lines on the page

Many people find this combination of slower reading at the beginning and end of the page and a quick look down at the middle of the page, a reassuring first step towards super-reading alone.

First and last

If you just read the first and last few lines on a page and omit the super-reading down the center of the page, the pattern is called first and last. In densely written texts, you might also read the first and last lines of sections or even paragraphs.

If you find the text is written in such a way that key information is not contained in the beginnings and endings of sections or paragraphs, try reading just the middle. It is also another pattern.
