Chapter 18

Dane

I wake before seven and hear Ashley moving around, so I carefully get out of bed and dress. Using the crutches, I take care of business in the bathroom. Not wanting to get on Ashley’s bad side, I go back to my bedroom, leaving the crutches and utilizing the wheelchair. I go in search of Ashley, who is in the kitchen, frying up some bacon. My, that is a fine sight.

Hearing me approach in the wheelchair, Ashley whirls around. “Oh, I’m sorry if I woke you. I think my brain is still on Indiana time,” she apologizes.

“No, you didn’t wake me. I’ve always been an early riser. And I didn’t get to sleep in at the hospital,” I explain as she moves a chair so I can be seated at the table.

Ashley turns back to the stove, carefully turning the bacon. “Since you’re awake, would you mind if I go ahead and turn on the service at my church? The praise and worship start at nine, which is seven here. Then Pastor Jay or an assistant pastor will bring the message about nine-thirty.”

“I don’t mind at all. What can I do to help with breakfast?”

Ashley looks at me over her shoulder and then back to the bacon as she removes it from the skillet. “You stay right there. I’m not sure there’s enough room in this small kitchen for the both of us.” She says with a smile. Taking the egg carton from the refrigerator, Ashley asks, “How would you like your eggs?”

“Today, I’d like a fried egg sandwich with a nice layer of bacon on it.”

Ashley breaks a couple of eggs into the skillet and then comes over to the table. Picking up her tablet, music is soon streaming. Setting it back down on the table so I can see it and she will be able to when she joins me.

She soon has breakfast on the table for both of us. It looks like a single scrambled egg and two strips of bacon for her, the egg sandwich I had requested for me, and a cup of fruit for each of us. Plus, hot chocolate for her; coffee for me. We eat in silence as we watch and listen to the music, live from her church in Indianapolis. The stage clears and a guy comes forward to make announcements. He’s lighthearted and fun, even making me laugh a couple of times. I notice he is dressed casually. Then the guy welcomes Pastor Jay to the stage. I nearly drop my fork and the bite of fruit. He is dressed casually too, in worn blue jeans and a flannel shirt. “He doesn’t have a suit on.”

Ashley’s eyes leave the tablet and look at me, I must have said it out loud. It was like a thought flashed through her mind. She clears her throat and says, “Our church is really a diverse group of people. We are of all skin colors, all social statuses, and all levels of education. We have some little ole’ ladies that dress to the nines in dresses, stockings, and hats.
