THE ROSE MOTEL HAD seen its heyday somewhere in the mid-1960s and not advanced since then, a fact evident by its weathered appearance and lack of customers.

Brigid stood outside the room Tom had directed her to and wished she was anywhere else. Delaying her knock, her mind traveled back to when they’d been an item. Admittedly, he’d been fun to a nothing-reporter like her. He’d made her feel like she was part of the in-crowd, and initially, that’d been enough to fuel their relationship.

Then, he’d started to pressure her. Not only sexually, but also for news of what was happening at the paper. He’d wanted the inside scoop on what they were producing, and she’d started to doubt his interest. When her need for space had kicked in, she’d been almost desperate to be out of the shadow he cast. She hadn’t been prepared for his anger and jealousy.

She was wrong to not have looked him in the eye and broken up properly. Instead, she’d made excuses, avoiding him, until he’d left her a nasty voicemail.

I’ll make it hard on you to find work in this town. Don’t think your position, sitting so close to Damon, will protect you. You’ll be on the back page, where no one can find you.

His voice rang in her head. He’d partially succeeded, spoiling her name enough her boss had become reluctant to use her. She was “the big breakup” in the entertainment news, the spoiled bratty daughter of rich folks who never gave a dime to help others. She’d worked hard to overcome that image, to prove she could work on their terms. Then the incident with Damon had happened, and the daily pressure had added its weight to her already burdened shoulders.

She hadn’t seen Tom face-to-face until dinner at the Porters, and his reaction was exactly what she remembered. As was their argument, car to car, at the gate.

Her hand curled into a fist, she held it over the door. If only there was a way out of this. She knocked, and the lock turned. Tom pulled the door open.

He was an attractive man. His shirt unbuttoned, the collar wide, his black hair disheveled, gave him a rakish appearance. His reputation as the “bad boy of the news” seemed to draw people like flies. She’d once been included in that.

“Figured you wouldn’t come,” he said.

Brigid frowned. “I said I would. It’s better to look someone in the eye and tell them what a jackass they are.”

His face flushed red, and his grip on the door tightened. He didn’t react any further, however. Admirable for him. A minute passed, and he seemed to calm. He reversed. “Come in. I need your help.”

Obedient, she squeezed past him. The room was the standard double bed of most low-end motels, although the furniture was older, and the carpet smelled musty. An older TV sat on a stand against the wall across from the beds. His luggage in front of it, and to the right, zipped closed, with nothing personal lying anywhere.
