Jennifer’s mother stepped out onto the front steps, her mouth already formed for calling. “Jennifer!”

As if in response to her mother’s voice, the streetlights up and down the street flicked on, the one nearest where Moonseeker stood casting a pool of light which illuminated them like a spotlight in the middle of a stage. Since there seemed nothing else to be done, Jennifer sat completely still and waited for her mother to react to what she was seeing.

But her mother didn’t react. She looked directly at the end of the driveway and at the streetlight and at Jennifer atop the huge horse as if there were nothing to be seen. Then she turned and faced the other direction, calling again, “Jennifer!”

Jennifer couldn’t breathe. Her name rang through the still air one more time, and then her mother, obviously exasperated, stepped back into the house, shutting the door with a bang.
