PRACTICE: REACTIVE WELLBEING INITIATIVES

Even after the best proactive preparation, we still need a collection of tools that help us to effectively react when students struggle to self-regulate. At times like these, it’s important for us to have effective ways to react and help students to get back on track. The six strategies and approaches shared below can be considered in tandem with the behaviour management strategies outlined in the previous chapter.

Each day is a new day

For all traumatised children, it is important that each day is treated as a new day, and that grudges aren’t held. Teachers and carers must find it within themselves to forgive, to move on, and to invite the student back to school – and to learning – in an open and welcoming way (but see p. 107 for advice on dealing with behaviour that endangers others).
