"That's wonderful news!" Nina's mom gushes into the phone. "You're pregnant! Does this mean you and Noel are finally making wedding plans?"

"Not exactly." Nina takes a deep breath. "Noel and I broke up." She's been avoiding talking to her parents for weeks now, but when her mom called early this morning, she knew it couldn't be put off any longer.

"What?" She can sense her mother's euphoria come to a screeching halt. "I don't understand."

Nina takes a deep breath and finally explains to her how Noel left her for his twenty-four-year-old intern.

"But why would he do that? It sounds like he's lost his mind."

"Yes, it does, doesn't it? In any case, we're no longer together."

She hears her mom calling for her dad and then explaining it all to him. The next thing she knows, her dad gets on the phone. "This is outrageous! If you’re pregnant, then Noel needs to do the right thing!"

Nina almost smiles. She knows her dad means well, but she's not interested in a shotgun wedding with a man who broke her heart and can't be trusted. "It's more complicated than that. This baby might not be his."

There's silence on the other end of the line. She's clearly shocked her father. "Ah… what exactly are you saying? Were you cheating on Noel?"

"No, I wasn't." She takes a breath and prepares to shatter her parents' image of her as their perfect golden daughter. "I met someone else after we broke up."

"So fast?"

"It was just something that happened because I was upset." But then she regrets saying that. She doesn't want them to think Brody took advantage of her, which couldn't be further from the truth. "I mean, I wanted it to happen. We have a connection. Anyway… I'm going in for a paternity test next week."

She can hear her mom in the background asking, "What did she just say?"

Her dad tells her, "The baby might not be Noel's."

Then comes her mom's high-pitched "What?"

"You can put it on speakerphone," Nina says. "That might be easier." Unfortunately, neither of her parents is that great with technology.

"Do you need us to fly back to the States?" her dad asks. "Are you in trouble? Do you need anything?"

"I'm okay." She feels bad for the way she's obviously worrying them. And to think she hasn't even told them she was fired from her job. She decides to keep that to herself for now. "You don't need to fly back. I mean, when the baby is born, you'll obviously want to."

"I'm having trouble understanding all this," her dad says. "It doesn't sound like you, Nina."

She sighs. "I know. But I'm honestly okay. Suzy and Luke have both offered to help me. And Brody wants to help too."

"Who's Brody?"

"Brody is the other man who might be my baby's father."

"And what does this Brody do for a living?"

"He's a mechanic who owns his own business." She can already sense the disapproval from her father. The truth is her parents are snobs. Being a mechanic doesn't sound
