HANGING STRUCTURES

When my oldest daughter was three, she was obsessed with hanging things from our ceiling. Nothing was off-limits in her mobile-making madness. Part of the fun in this project lies in selecting the right spot for your structure: a tree branch in view of the kitchen window, an S-hook in the middle of a playroom, or a crossbeam on a bunk bed. Show your child how to make a simple mobile, then step back to see what she does with this new information.

Supplies

• Straws, chopsticks, wooden skewers, or twigs

• Tape, clear or paper

• String

• Heavy-weight paper, such as card stock

• Markers

• Scissors

• Hole punch

PREP

Prepare the hanging structure for a simple mobile by crossing two sticks in the middle to make an X. Secure the sticks in the middle with tape, string, or a pipe

cleaner. Tie another piece of string at the cross section to be attached to a ceiling hook or taped to the ceiling.

INVITATION

Show your child how she can attach paper shapes to the mobile by dangling them from a string. Work together to make and decorate shapes, punch holes, and hang the shapes from the mobile.
