To circumvent this problem, CVT or continuously variable transmissions have been created. With this type of transmission, it is possible to shift gears while the tractor is still moving thus eliminating the need to stop. It also allows tractors to travel on roads without being a hindrance to other motorists. CVT is especially ideal for heavy implements that cannot be operated easily with manual transmission. It allows a lot of power to be easily transferred to these implements.

An even better type of transmission is the hydrostatic transmission. It is more reliable and allows a quick change in direction. However a hydrostatic transmission is lower in efficiency and tends to result in significant loss of power. This means that any attached implements receive less power. Thus, hydrostatic transmission is preferred for low power implements that are used in tasks that require high operational efficiency and precision.
