Quite simply, this notion seemed to run counter to most of what I understood of God's free gift. In the tradition that nurtured me, God is the One Who breaks our religious chains and shatters punctilious legalism. We do not have to jump through hoops and prove our worthiness to get Him to love us. It is He, not we, who makes all the overtures. My Christianity was formed around the liberating truth that God's grace is accessible here and now by simple faith in Jesus. We do not have to earn it; we have only to accept it. This is, of course, a fact deeply rooted in Scripture. "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith," said Paul, "and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."[37] No red tape, no rigmarole, no "good deeds" required.
