The public service announcement I produced for the Los Angeles chapter of the Red Cross won several local TV advertising awards and even played at the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. At the time we were only students scrambling to make a small budget fit the needs of our production, but we managed to re-create a scene from the Battle of Solferino in the Angeles National Forest and depict a young Henri, dressed in a white linen suit, attending to the wounded inside a historic downtown church that doubled for the church at Castiglione. I succeeded in bringing in a consultant from England, an expert on nineteenth-century European military history, who charged us nothing for his services. We got costumes at a reduced rate from Paramount Studios and free use of a thirty-five-millimeter Panavision movie camera with prime lenses. Remember, we were film students!

I cast eager actors from Austria and Italy, and the man we selected for the role of Henri was a French actor looking for a break in Hollywood. When he learned he had landed the part, he came to my apartment in Glendale so we could talk. Toward the end of our conversation, I told him I would like him to read all four of the Gospels because, as I said to him, “You must capture the heart of a man who walked in the steps of Christ and spent himself in service to others.” He stared at me. He had never read the Bible before. I handed him my own copy of the New Testament. He tucked it inside his jacket and rode off on his motorcycle. When the day came for us to shoot in the church, he looked—and acted—every bit the part.

How does one do justice to the greatness and goodness of a man like Jean-Henri Dunant? We made a small contribution, perhaps, with our television commercial, which was called “The History of the Red Cross.” I pray his inclusion in this book will do even more to maintain the Christian emphasis of his life’s work.
