“I wondered if you were coming out of there tonight.” Kevin looked up from the book he was reading to Jade and Carter.

“Soapy, sit by me.” Jade patted the cushion on the sectional and snuggled closer to him.

Sophie looked reluctant at first, but she joined them and pulled Carter into her lap when he reached out both hands and grunted.

Twenty minutes later the kids were tucked into their beds. He turned on the night-light in Carter’s room and closed the door.

In the living area, he found Sophie making one of her flavored coffees. “What’s the flavor of the night?” He settled on a stool at the island and watched her back as she pulled a mug from the cabinet over her fancy coffee machine.

She held the cabinet door open and glanced over her shoulder. “Chocolate raspberry. Do you want a cup?”

“That’s not a real flavor.”

“Oh, it’s a real flavor. You’re going to love it.” She grabbed another mug for him and set it on the counter. After a few quick pushes, the machine gave a long beep and groaned to life.

“It’s great with shortbread cookies.”

“How can you eat like that?” He waved off the cookie she offered. “I’m active every day and struggle to keep my activity level high enough to burn off what I eat.”

“Stress eating is a thing. I’m sure I’ll relax soon enough, but tonight I’m having chocolate raspberry coffee and a shortbread cookie. Or two.”

“In that case, I’ll take one, too.” He reached across the island for the package of cookies.

Sophie poured their coffee and sat beside him. “Tomorrow should be easier for both of us.”

“Not for me.” He popped the rest of the cookie into his mouth.

“Why not?”

“The Gran Colina Expo is tomorrow.”

Her eyes grew wide. “The expo?”

“Yes. It’s this same weekend every year. The store always does a big booth.”

“I know the expo is tomorrow, but I didn’t know you were going there instead of being here.” Her voice tightened with every word in spite of her obvious attempts to keep it calm.

“I told you about it the other day.”

She broke the rest of her cookie into tiny bits. “I didn’t hear you say you wouldn’t be here.”

He shrugged. “I don’t know if I said that, but vendors from all over the area are hosting. It’s one of my biggest promo events of the year. It’s January. People are starting to think about the spring. Hiking, fishing, all those outdoor things. I go so I can sell them everything they need for that. It’s a huge deal for my company. I thought you knew.”

“Why would I just know?” She took the napkin covered in cookie crumbs and tossed it into the trash. She kept her back to him and leaned on the counter with her head down. Her hair hung forward, hiding her face.

He took his mug to the sink. “I’m sorry, Sophie. I can’t miss it.”

“We need to coordinate our schedules.” She didn’t look up even though he stood right beside her.
