For Ease, Stand While Pulling the Neck
If your partner’s head is very heavy or if you lack the muscular strength to perform this stroke while seated, stand with your knees and hips flexed and your thighs supported against the head of the table to rise into a position that may offer you more mechanical advantage. If you use this stance, lean back into your hips for stability and to create traction on the neck.
2. USE FIGURE EIGHTS ON THE NECK AND UPPER SHOULDERS
With the backs of the fingers of both hands against the lateral back of your partner’s neck, glide down to his shoulders (photo A). Rotate your wrists outward so that your fingers are pointing skyward for their return back up to the base of his skull (photo B). When your hands are almost to the mastoid processes, rotate your wrists inward and glide back down his neck again with your fingers pointing toward the table surface. Keep the movements fluid and your hands soft. You may continue this figure-eight movement on his neck until you feel that he has released any holding of his head and neck. A variation is to turn his head to the left, holding at the occiput with your left hand to lengthen his neck, and do the figure-eight strokes only with your right hand, which will allow you to go a little farther into his shoulder on the right side. Repeat on his left side.
Circle across the Upper Chest
Standing at the left side of the table near your partner’s shoulder, use your right hand in a soft fist to lean in with circles across his pectoralis, or upper chest muscles, while you hold under his left scapula with your left hand, fingertips curved around the medial edge of the bone. You may go all the way across his chest, making sure to lighten up as you pass over his sternum, and make circles all the way back over to his left shoulder. Placing your right hand with your palm firmly down on his left shoulder and keeping your left hand under it, rotate the shoulder as you hold it between your palms.
