Of the deep-water plants, there are two further subdivisions: those that are submerged and those that have floating leaves. It’s worth noting here that the concept of specific ‘plant zones’ is a little misleading. In reality, there are crossovers between these zones. Yellow flag iris, for instance, can grow in standing water or the water margins, and many submerged water plants can grow in shallow waters as well as in deep water.

How to plant your pond plants

Though planting a pond can feel daunting to some, it really needn’t be as difficult as many guides like to insist. In fact, you can plant most pond plants by hand directly into the substrate with no tools at all.

Here are some important points to remember before planting:

• The most critical moment in planting up ponds is transferring the plants to your pond without them drying up or being damaged. While in transit, keep plants bagged up or in buckets and keep them wet at all times.

• Avoid fertilisers and resist the temptation to add extra topsoil while planting. These will add unnecessary pollutants to the water, possibly encouraging the growth of problem plants and algae.

• Some pond plants can drown! Remember that with emergent and floating-leaf plants at least some part of the plant needs to be in contact with the air at all times.

• Planting won’t always be successful. If something doesn’t take, try something different or try planting the same plants in a different zone, perhaps nearer the pond edge.
