Babylonian text

Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah, a Judean, as governor of Judah. He assured the people they had nothing to fear and tried to convince them to serve the king of Babylon.

Ishmael, who was of royal descent, and some army officers conspired to assassinate Gedaliah. They killed him along with the Judeans and Babylonians at Mizpah. Fearing reprisals from the Babylonians, the conspirators fled to Egypt and forced Jeremiah the prophet to go with them.

When Evil-Merodach became king of Babylon, in the thirty-seventh year of the exile, he released Jehoiachin from prison and gave him special privileges, including eating with the king.
