Friday February 13th 1863: Clear and warm. Took 1/8 grain Morph. The poultice was taken off at dinner time and soon this morn, and it had ran a great deal both times. Laid on my left side all day so as to let it run. My cough has not worried me. Cousin Liza sent gingercakes. I am lying looking out of the window in Mother’s room.

Saturday February 14th 1863: Valentine’s day. Took ½ pill. Took off the poultice and put on a greasy cloth. Rolled into the sitting room. It is quite warm. Mother is knitting a glove. Lincoln is going to raise an army of 150000 contrabands.28 Kentucky growls over the negro [Emancipation] proclamation. Our cavalry have been defeated at Fort Donelson with loss of 100. Forrest, Wheeler, + Wharton were compelled to retire.29 Cousin Annie left for home today. I sweat heavily every night and have until yesterday had fever in the evening. Had beef tea.

Sunday February 15th 1863: Cool and pleasant. … I would have slept very well but for the heavy + exhausting night sweat which took away my comfort. Got into bed with Father. Took brandy. The Dr. came to see me last night. As proof conclusive that this concern would have bursted, another hole beside the one the lancet made has broken. It ran “right smart” this morn. I ate 5 cakes which Mrs. Judge Nisbet sent me. French mediation for the 20th time is again on the tapes. It is stated that the “frenchey Emperair” has made proposals of mediation to both government the commissioners to meet at Montreal to settle terms. It was the “290” [Alabama] that sunk the Hatteras. Received a letter from Aunty; Uncle Edge is Brigade Q.M.30 3 new cases of smallpox in town one of which was at the wayside home.31 All have been removed to the pesthouse.32 Min received a letter from Tom yesterday…. My back ran a great deal when it was dressed at night. I take brandy 3 times per diem.

Monday February 16th 1863: Slept well, that is for me. It is cloudy and has rained some Grandma “made” me a nankin doublegown.33 Mother is very unwell and we sit in her room today. … Ever since I have been sick, Allen has been vagabandizing.34 The relief I experience since the abscess was lanced is inexpressible. Howard is hauling wood from the S.W.R.R.

Tuesday February 17th 1863: Cool and cloudy. Slept tolerable. The 46th [Ga. Inf.] is in Charleston again. French mediation is a bust. My cough is quiet. My back has not hurt me any. Tracy came up. … The Yankees at Vicksburg are deserting by the 100. Wrote to Thomas. Father brought some apples home at dinner. “Nab” came home this morning from the war.35 …

Wednesday February 18 1863: Cloudy and cool. Slept well. Minnie was right sick all night and is in bed yet. Price is as mean a suckegg as ever was. Gen Beauregard has issued a soul stirring proclamation calling upon Georgians + Carolinians to rally to Charleston + Savannah.
