It is clear that the movement of constellations was observed and understood from about 700 B.C. Thales introduced the concepts of geometry into astronomy around 600 B.C. Around 500 B.C., Pythagoras recognized that the earth is a sphere and imagined all known celestial bodies as inhabiting their own moving spheres. But because much of Greek thought was aimed at finding a single, perfect theory, advances were somewhat delayed.
