Chapter Six

Sheriff Merrow gave them a lift over to Creepy Critter Pets. Camille was the first one through the door.

“CC!” she called. “Are you all right?”

CC—who Nathaniel gathered was also Caroline—stood up from behind the counter. Camille rushed over to her, and the friends hugged for a long time.

“It was awful,” CC said. “Someone broke in. Things were a mess. They let all the animals out of their kennels. And the rabbits…” She burst into tears.

With more calm than she’d displayed at the studio, Camille stroked CC’s head. “I’m so sorry.”

“I feel so violated,” CC said.

“I know.”

With a lift of his brow and nod of his chin, Merrow silently signaled for Nathaniel and Alex to follow him. They went out the back door.

“We found the rabbits out here,” Merrow explained. “Although, according to Caroline, they had originally been inside.”

Nathaniel flexed his jaw, grinding his molars. “Grey must have a thing for rabbits. He took one on the journey here also. My best guess is that he needed to feed, but the rabbits must not have been enough, so he stumbled across the human and attacked. Some vamps get the short end of the stick when it comes to control.”

Merrow nodded. “I don’t like that he chose to come to Caroline’s place when she was with Camille last night, especially after their run-in with him at Howler’s. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me. What do you think?” He looked at his deputy.

Alex frowned. “Hard to say.”

The sheriff sighed and led the way back into the pet shop. With Camille’s help, the females had straightened the toppled cans of animal food and were well on the way to having the shop fixed up again.

“Maybe you should stay at my place tonight,” Camille suggested to CC.

CC gave a half smile. “That would be nice.”

The males helped with some final clean up as CC gathered her things, and then they all exited the shop together.

“Let’s hope we catch this vamp before tomorrow evening,” Alex said. “We don’t want him ruining our ball. I’ve worked too hard learning those fancy steps.” He grinned at Camille, and her face flushed with color.

Nathaniel curled his hands into fists, jealousy raging through him. “Why don’t I escort the women home?” he suggested as calmly as he could.

“Good idea,” said the sheriff. “Be in touch if you see or hear anything else regarding this vampire, and we’ll do the same.”

Nathaniel nodded and then guided Camille and CC down the street.

When they reached Camille’s doorstep, CC went on inside while Camille lingered with the door ajar. The poor girl, he thought of CC. She seemed absolutely spent, and Nathaniel wouldn’t be surprised if she was asleep on the couch within minutes.

He gazed at Camille as she pushed her hair away from her face and stretched. Anxiety wound through him as he warred with the decision of what to do next. Should he go back to the D&B, or should he offer to stay?

“I didn’t get a chance to tell you earlier,” she said, “but you did great dancing tonight.
